Art Steve Baker: Surrealist Turned Naïve Artist

Early Years and Artistic Journey

Artist Steve Baker began his creative journey in the 1960s. A laid-back surfing hippie known for his bright, quirky shirts, Steve’s love for art was evident from an early age. Although his art career was sidelined at times, he never lost his passion for various artistic pursuits. As an artist, Steve Baker resonates with collectors and art lovers who appreciate his unique perspective.

The Vibrant 1970s

The 1970s was a particularly vibrant decade for artist Steve Baker. During this period, he opened a stall at the Magic Market in Little Malop Street, where he explored numerous creative outlets. From making beanbags to wood sculpting, leather work, and painting, Steve embraced a range of artistic endeavours. His versatility as an artist set him apart, and his creations reflected the fun and free-spirited energy he carried with him.

Iconic Works and Lasting Impression

One of Steve’s most iconic works from this period was a large mural depicting a lunar landscape, part of which still survives today on the side wall of the old Magic Market. This lasting impression is a testament to his influence and creativity during a transformative era for himself and the local art scene, leaving a significant mark that continues to inspire others.

Evolution of Style

Though Steve’s style evolved from surrealism to a more naïve approach as his eyesight diminished, his passion for art remained unwavering. His artistic journey continues to inspire many, including his daughters, Nicki Baker-Comelli and Jessica Baker-Vince, who have followed in his creative footsteps.
