“White walls don’t make you smile.”
Artist Nicki Comelli intuitively paints in her studio. Colour and fashion inspire her paintings, along with the mantra, “When you smile, you make other people smile. It makes the world a better place.”
Nicki is an abstract mark maker. Her artwork is often completed over months and sometimes years; This allows her to work on several paintings simultaneously.

Nicki Comelli paints under her family name Baker. Her father is a surrealist painter, and her sister Jessica Baker is one of Australia’s top-selling contemporary artists.
Ever since Nicki could remember, there was always a painting on an easel in her home. Her first recollection at age six is a large-scale work-in-progress surrealist painting on the outer edge of her family’s living room.
The artwork on this easel adorned classic black and white tiles inspired by surrealist painter Salvador Dali: nude figures, melting clocks and a self-portrait of the artist himself, her father, Steve Baker.
Nicki’s mother was a creative spirit; too, she loved to write poetry and dabbled in Zen-style bamboo painting. With these two creatives in her life, it was only natural for her to pursue an artistic path.
